Super Bowl LIV: Shanahan’s timeout strategy, Kittle’s penalty create questions at end of first half

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — With a chance to stop the clock late in the second quarter of Super Bowl LIV, 49ers general manager John Lynch was caught on camera signaling for a timeout.

Neither head coach Kyle Shanahan nor referee Bill Vinovich heard Lynch’s plea, because he was behind a glass window in a suite at Hard Rock Stadium.

Even if Shanahan knew what Lynch was saying, there’s no guarantee he would have elected to use one of his three timeouts to stop the clock with more than 90 seconds remaining in the half.
