San Francisco 49ers: Restructuring Malcolm Smith’s contract makes sense, for now

On Friday, March 8, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported San Francisco 49ers linebacker Malcolm Smith restructured his contract and will remain with the team despite possibilities he’d be a cap casualty entering 2019.

The exact terms of the deal are not yet known.

Smith, who’ll turn 30 years old this offseason, initially was one of the Niners’ big-ticket free-agent signings back in 2017, signing a five-year, $26.5 million contract after two relatively disappointing years with the Oakland Raiders. The move made sense at the time, as then-newly minted defensive coordinator Robert Saleh worked with Smith when both were with the Seattle Seahawks, previously.
