At some point in the not-so-distant future, the San Francisco 49ers are going to have to open their proverbial checkbook for third-year defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who is well on his way to receiving Pro Bowl accolades for the first time in his pro career.
Buckner, the Niners’ top selection from the 2016 NFL Draft, is in year three of a four-year rookie contract, one which would include a fifth-year option for a first-round player. Currently, that four-year deal is worth $18.19 million.
It’s safe to say Buckner has far surpassed that value.
