Report: 49ers to place RB Joe Williams on injured reserve

Running back Joe Williams apparently suffered an ankle injury in the 49ers' preseason finale and will be placed on injured reserve.

According to the NFL Network, Williams will go on injured reserve as part of the team's initial effort to get down to 53 players. That means Williams, a fourth-round pick the team targeted in the draft, will not play in 2017.

Williams ran the ball 10 times for 53 yards Thursday before being relieved by Raheem Mostert. It appears Carlos Hyde, rookie Matt Breida and Mostert will be the tailbacks on San Francisco's initial 53-man roster.
