Everyone can agree on one thing: The 49ers’ Trey Lance era was one catastrophic blunder. The actual trade itself, though, was met with more equanimity, with most punditry focusing on the Cowboys paying an over-market price or the 49ers realizing (very slight) cap savings. Lance wanted out; Kyle Shanahan clearly preferred Sam Darnold as his backup; it made some sense to move on.
