Kaepernick honor underscores awkward position NFL is in

Earlier this year Colin Kaepernick won the 49ers' most prestigious honor, the Len Eshmont Award, which is voted on by teammates. Now he's eligible to win the NFL Players Association's highest annual award.

Kaepernick on Friday was named the NFLPA's Week 1 Community MVP after he made the latest monthly $100,000 donation and he hosted a back-to-school backpack giveaway in New York. The weekly honor puts him in the running for this year’s Byron Whizzer White Award, which the players union in a statement said "is the highest honor that the NFLPA can bestow upon a player."

Last week's community award winner was Houston Texans defensive lineman J.
