Jerry Azzinaro, who coached the defensive line for the 49ers in 2016, has been hired for the same position at Cal by new coach Justin Wilcox.
Azzinaro has coached in the college or pro ranks for 35 seasons, including the last eight under recently fired 49ers coach Chip Kelly.
Before his one year with the 49ers, he spent three seasons under Kelly with the Philadelphia Eagles. From 2009-12 he was Kelly’s defensive line coach at Oregon. The Ducks twice led the Pac-12 in sacks under Azzinaro, in 2009 and 2011.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Azzinaro, 58, was the defensive coordinator at Duke from 2004-2006.
