Erik Pears: Why 49ers Need to Cut Right Tackle in 2016

As a general manager, you are never going to hit on 100 per cent of your free agents or draft picks and Trent Baalke has learned that the hard way.

Baalke has particularly struggled in free agency during his tenure as 49ers GM and missed big time last offseason when he brought in Erik Pears from the Buffalo Bills. Admittedly Pears was only supposed to be the Niners’ swing tackle, but Anthony Davis’ unexpected sabbatical thrust him into the starting lineup, where his deficiencies in pass protection were brutally exposed.

Pears ended the 2015 season with a Pro Football Focus grade of minus 30.
