49ers to part ways with WR Torrey Smith after two seasons

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers reportedly released wide receiver Torrey Smith Monday in advance of free agency, getting 53 receptions over two seasons in one of the club’s few big forays into free agency into recent years under former general manager Trent Baalke.

Smith, who missed the last four games of the 2016 season with concussion symptoms, had 20 receptions for 267 yards and averaged 13.4 yards per catch with three touchdowns. ESPN and the Sacramento Bee were among the first outlets to report Smith’s exit from the roster.

In 2015, the year he signed a five-year contract that had a maximum value of $40 million, Smith had 33 catches for 663 yards, averaging 20.
