With the 187th pick in the NFL Draft, the 49ers selected offensive lineman Nick Zakelj from Fordham.
A four-year starter at Fordham, Zakelj was projected to be taken in round five or six.
At Fordham, Zakelj played in a zone-based running scheme which will help with his transition to the NFL. He’s shown some issues with getting to reach blocks and will need to improve his pad level if he is to get on the field.
Pass protection is a strength for Zakelj. He shows athleticism with his feet and long arms, allowing him to mirror pass rushers and drive them around the quarterback.
