The San Francisco 49ers released veteran safety George Odum over the weekend. His departure could open the door for San Francisco to upgrade its secondary in a major way.
This move is not a huge shock as the Niners made a number of cost-cutting measures during the offseason, and Odum always seemed like a potential casualty of that approach.
Odum’s departure is unfortunate because he distinguished himself as a solid player for San Francisco, especially on special teams. He is one of those valuable role players every team needs who does not get much glamor or chance to shine but does the little things right.
