49ers pregame: Safety switch; surprise RB added

SANTA CLARA — Running back Matt Dayes got promoted over Jeff Wilson Jr. from the 49ers practice squad, mere hours before the 49ers were to host the New York Giants.

Dayes not only will back up Matt Breida and Alfred Morris but he’ll need to contribute on special teams, which was the specialty of the 49ers’ previous third running back, Raheem Mostert, who broke his arm last game.

The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Dayes will wear No. 43 in his first game action since last season with the Cleveland Brown (five carries, 13 yards; four receptions, 29 yards).

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Christian Kirk (13) makes a touchdown catch as San Francisco 49ers defensive back Tyvis Powell (30) and cornerback Jimmie Ward (20) defend during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Oct.
