Seven weeks after linebacker Chris Borland announced he was walking away from the sport after one NFL season, the 49ers on Monday placed him on the reserve/retired list.
The procedural move creates $109,359 in immediate cap savings. Borland’s schedule cap figure of $694,359 is replaced by a player making $585,000, as only the top-51 players count against the salary cap until the final cuts.
The 49ers entered the day $6,741,660 under the league’s salary cap, according to NFLPA records.
Borland, who led the 49ers in tackles as a rookie, unexpectedly announced his retirement on March 16 due to long-term effects of head trauma, he said.
