49ers health reboot costs long-time trainer his job

SANTA CLARA — Long-time athletic trainer Jeff Ferguson is the 49ers’ latest casualty in their New Year’s resolution to get healthier.

Ferguson became the 49ers head trainer in 2006 and was a holdover through five coaching changes during a 13-year tenure.

Injuries plagued coach Kyle Shanahan’s first two seasons, and partly because of that, the 49ers preceded Ferguson’s dismissal by firing head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright last week.
