49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will look closely at his former players in free agency

SANTA CLARA — Expect 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to look hard at free agents who fit in his comfort zone.

With the 49ers having only 58 players under contract and more than $90 million cap space, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will be busy contacting agents of prospective free agents when the league’s negotiating period begins Tuesday at 9 a.m. (Pacific time).

Go ahead and assume Shanahan will be contact a handful his former players, some dating back as far as stint as a Houston Texans assistant in 2006-07. Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Washington from 2010-13, the Browns in 2014 and joined Atlanta for the 2015 season.
