49ers caught asleep at the wheel as prolific edge rusher joins playoff rival

The San Francisco 49ers need all the help they can get on the edge. Their defensive front was their weakest point last season, allowing 24 rushing touchdowns and finishing among the bottom ten teams in the league in sacks.

General manager John Lynch poured everything he could into the defense this offseason, spending top draft picks on edge rusher Mykel Williams and defensive tackle Alfred Collins and trading for Bryce Huff.

But it's still not enough to make fans feel confident going into the season. To further strengthen the defensive line, the 49ers had been linked to veteran Za'Darius Smith.
