San Francisco 49ers linebacker and four-time All-Pro Fred Warner was carted off early in Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers with what looked like a serious ankle injury.
The injury looked to be an unfortunate accident that happened with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter. While trying to bring down Tampa Bay running back Rachaad White, Niners safety Ji'Ayir Brown rolled onto Warner's right ankle. Players on both sides of the ball immediately called for medical assistance as Warner clutched his leg. The game broadcast only showed the replay of the incident once, and announcer Jim Nantz described it as “a gruesome injury” after seeing it “from several angles.
