49ers add ex-Stanford tight end Levine Toilolo to mix

SANTA CLARA — Levine Toilolo, a Stanford product with ties to Kyle Shanahan, is joining the 49ers tight end competition.

Toilolo signed with the 49ers on Wednesday morning. He played with the Atlanta Falcons when Shanahan was their offensive coordinator from 2016-17, and he started in their 2016 season’s Super Bowl loss.

Although the 49ers obviously have one of the league’s top tight ends in George Kittle, their depth at that spot needed to be addressed this offseason, and Toilolo’s blocking prowess makes him a late addition.
