49ers Free Agency News And Rumors Roundup: San Francisco Targeting Sean Smith, Trade With Chiefs?

NFL Free Agency starts on March 9th, and the next few days will feature several San Francisco 49ers rumors. While free agency doesn't officially start until Wednesday, Monday and Tuesday are "legal tampering" days. That means teams can discuss contracts with any player, although a deal can't be signed until Wednesday. With that in mind, here are a few of the more interesting rumors and news tidbits on the 49ers

49ers Targeting Sean Smith?
Smith is arguably the top corner on the market this offseason, and the cap-limited Chiefs might not be able to bring him back. The 49ers are one of two teams pursuing Smith heavily.

The Raiders and 49ers both badly need CB help and both have cap space to spare. There could be a bidding war between the two Bay Area teams.

49ers-Chiefs Talking Trade?
While this doesn't involve free agency, it's an intriguing rumor nonetheless. The 49ers and Chiefs are reportedly involved in a trade focused on De'Anthony Thomas.

Thomas ended last season with a "non-football injury" and there was speculation that included he could retire. Thomas played for current 49ers head coach Chip Kelly, although Kelly is not the one calling the shots in San Francisco. The 49ers lack weapons on offense, and Thomas' speed would help. It likely wouldn't cost much of the 49ers to trade for him.

Alex Boone To Get $8 Million?
Guard Alex Boone is set to hit the open market this offseason, and he could be in for a big pay day.

That's a lot to pay for Boone, especially since he's coming off a down season. There's a good chance he doesn't end up getting that.
