49ers News: LaMichael James Injury Update, Role On Sunday Against Chargers?

In this 49ers news and rumors update, San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James is expected to return punts and kickoffs on Sunday, just four weeks after suffering a dislocated right elbow in practice.

According to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, James will wear an elbow brace despite initial reluctance.

"The elbow's good, it's stronger and I'm getting more comfortable wearing a brace," James said, via Inman's article on Friday.

James joked that his first brace "felt like a 10-pound dumbbell." Despite his growing comfort with the smaller brace, he plans to "ditch it" before the September 7th season opener in Dallas.

"The new one, it's comfortable and I'll use it as a weapon," James said, laughing.

James dislocated the same elbow during his time at the University of Oregon. Prior to last month's injury, he was slated to become the team's #2 running back after Kendall Hunter's season-ending injury.

At this point, his injury will likely determine his availability (and depth chart slot) as the weeks go on.
