With MLB draft, Padres prove what you see isn’t always what you get

Nick Margevicius throws his fastball at 88-91 mph and on a good day can touch 92. That was true two years ago at Rider University. What’s different is the grip of his change-up, the curveball he added before his first full professional season and the slider he’s continuing to tinker with as one of the biggest surprises from the 2017 draft class.

The 22-year-old left-hander was the second pitcher from his class to reach the majors. Not even Margevicius would have predicted that path was in his future when the Padres selected him in the seventh round that year.
