Unlike Kroc, Fowler's rant no accident

Ron Fowler is not Ray Kroc. Much different person and personality. Different era, different motives, in that Kroc wasn’t as canny as Fowler.

Kroc saved the San Diego Padres from becoming the Washington D.C. Padres. Like Citizen Kane with newspapers, the McDonald’s magnate thought it might be fun to own a baseball team. He paid $12 million.

But Kroc’s mark came in 1974. He turned his new club, which couldn’t find its off ramp, onto the major league highway when he grabbed the P.A. mic and told the San Diego Stadium crowd on opening night, “I’ve never seen such stupid ball playing in my life.
