This day in 1998: McGwire and Sosa held homerless, Padres and seven other teams idle

On April 16, 1998, the 12-3 Padres had a well-deserved day of rest. Winners of nine of their past ten games, the Friars were heading to Pittsburgh after splitting a pair in San Francisco. With San Diego out of the picture, the next logical thing to check was how Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa fared. McGwire was 0-for-4 against the Diamondbacks, then sat out the second game of a doubleheader; Sosa, who had yet to announce his presence in the home run race with authority, hit two singles in five at-bats in an 8-4 win over the Mets.
