Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the ninth inning with the San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates tied, 1-1. Tatis Jr. lined a ball into left field and slid into second base, placing himself in scoring position with no outs.
Luis Arraez followed with a ground ball to Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, which kept Tatis Jr. from advancing and gave Pittsburgh an out. Manny Machado followed with a chance to give the Padres the lead with a hit.
Tatis Jr. stole third during Machado’s at-bat, which meant a sacrifice fly could give San Diego the lead.
