Padres working, waiting; MLB could send players home

PEORIA, Ariz. —

In light of the President declaring a national emergency and with an understanding the season will almost certainly be delayed longer than the hoped-for two weeks, teams across baseball began to shift into something of a shutdown mode.

The Padres were still sorting through their options Friday afternoon, as players and staff awaited official direction, but one report said Major League Baseball and its players’ union agreed players should be allowed to leave spring training sites for home.

As of late Friday morning, teams were reacting differently to the previous day’s announcement that spring training was halted and the regular season would be delayed at least two weeks.
