The Padres feel confident that they will have enough able-bodied pitchers to fill out their rotation with some backup, but Thursday they got a little more insurance as they signed veteran Jeremy Guthrie to a minor league deal to start the year in AAA. The 36 year old was cut by the Rangers after carving out a nice niche for himself with the Royals over the last several seasons.

Guthrie stumbled last year as he went 8-8 in 24 starts and did not appear in any of the Royals post-season games.
