Padres rally, then lose series to Marlins on walk-off in ninth

MIAMI —

Brian Anderson’s double down the left field line off reliever Trey Wingenter scored Yadiel Rivera from second base with one out in the ninth inning to give the Marlins a 4-3 victory Thursday over the Padres.

The walk-off hit kept the Padres going the wrong direction.

With a chance to win the series against the lowly Marlins, the Padres instead sank back to four games under .500, a depth to which they descended for the first time Tuesday.

The Padres (46-50) embarked on this nine-game trip knowing opportunity awaited — to either re-assert themselves as contenders or establish that they are still at least another year away.
