ATLANTA — As expected, the Padres placed catcher Christian Bethancourt on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday and selected Hector Sanchez from Triple-A El Paso.
Bethancourt suffered a left intercostal strain taking a swing Tuesday and exited the Padres' eventual loss to Atlanta in the fourth inning. With rosters not expanding until Thursday and Derek Norris the only healthy catcher on the team, another backstop was needed.
In a move for depth, Sanchez, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox in May. With three catchers on the roster, he rarely played and was eventually designated for assignment and outrighted to El Paso.
