Padres notes: Tatis stuns again; Quantrill provides relief; Hedges bounces back

PITTSBURGH —

Before his walk-off walk gave the Pirates an 11-10 victory in the 11th inning, rookie second baseman Kevin Newman was just another part of the process Sunday.

The process the rest of baseball is going through learning just how difficult it is to corral Padres rookie Fernando Tatis Jr.

The 20-year-old led off Sunday’s game with a walk, went to third on Manny Machado’s one-out double and then added to, among others, his feats earlier this month of scoring from second base on a grounder and from third base after being looked back by the pitcher.
