Padres notes: Quantrill slides into first win with nudge from Hedges; Myers’ perfect six; international, interleague streaks

TORONTO —

Before Austin Hedges hit his first career grand slam in Saturday’s 19-4 victory over the Blue Jays, the catcher scored points with yet another Padres pitcher.

“Dude,” Hedges said to Cal Quantrill on their way from the bullpen to the visitors’ dugout before the game, “we’re going to throw a lot of sliders today.”

From there, Quantrill just kept following Hedges through six innings and all the way to his first major league victory in their first time working together in a game.

“When Hedgy is calling a game, you don’t shake,” said Quantrill, who struck out nine and allowed three runs and two hits, both homers.
