Padres notes: Players contemplate games with no fans; Pham delayed; roster moves

PEORIA, Ariz. —

Even as they remained focused on preparing for the season, Padres players on Wednesday seemed to more widely and deeply grasp the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’ve seen some headlines, but I haven’t really thought about it,” Eric Hosmer said, echoing a refrain of many teammates. “Now is definitely time to take it a little more serious and understand what’s going on.”

They spoke among themselves in shock when they heard NCAA tournament games would be played in nearly empty arenas. Some have begun speculating about what will happen with the MLB season, whether there would be a delay to the start of the season or games would go ahead without fans.
