Padres notes: Naylor’s loss; Lagares’ chance; Gore’s bullpen; Manny’s arrival

PEORIA, Ariz. —

Josh Naylor was the first Padres player to know Jayce Tingler would be the team’s new manager.

Frustrated by some events early in a game his Leones del Escogido team was trailing on Oct. 23, Tingler retreated to the clubhouse to blow off some steam. Coincidentally, it was while he was inside that Padres General Manager A.J. Preller called to offer him his first big-league manager job.

Shortly after returning to the dugout, Tingler pulled his left fielder, who was nursing a sore hamstring.

“He was pissed I took him out,” Tingler recalled of Naylor.
