Padres notes: Mejia does impossible; Naylor’s status; Lauer to start Friday

MIAMI —

Maybe Francisco Mejia is meeting the Padres in the middle.

Or maybe not.

The rookie catcher walked twice in a game here Tuesday for the first time as a Padre but still swung at seven of the 17 pitches he saw outside the strike zone.

“He’s going to be aggressive, he’s going to be a free-swinging type hitter,” manager Andy Green said. “It’s tough to ask him to bridle that. Just turn him loose, square baseballs up and go have success. He’s been very aggressive his whole career.”

The Padres spent the spring trying to get Mejia to tighten up his strike zone.
