Padres notes: Jorge Mateo tests positive for COVID-19; Jose Castillo hurting again

The Padres are contending with a second positive COVID-19 test.

Infielder Jorge Mateo tested positive during intake testing, Padres manager Jayce Tingler announced Wednesday afternoon. Unlike outfielder Tommy Pham — who was asymptomatic according to the team — the 25-year-old Mateo had been dealing with a loss of smell and taste.

“He has not been to the ballpark, on the field, locker room or anything like that,” Tingler said. “He’s been self-isolating. … The reports are coming back that the smell and taste is starting to come back to him. He is feeling a little better.”

Out of options, Mateo was acquired from the Athletics late last month for a player to be named later.
