The next few weeks comprise a crucial period for the Padres bullpen, in particular for the young pitchers within it and those in the minors possibly on the verge of being called up and/or activated off the injured list.

It is important not only for the team’s success this season but also to provide a glimpse into what they can offer in the future.

“There are opportunities for guys,” bullpen coach Doug Bochtler said. “They can just grab them right now if they want them.”

The list of relatively inexperienced, high-ceiling arms essentially auditioning to stick is rookie Gerardo Reyes.
