Padres notes: Cronenworth can pitch, but only as position player; Westman promoted

PEORIA, Ariz. —

The Padres might gain some relief by keeping Jake Cronenworth on their roster.

But doing so won’t allow them to take full advantage of the system, at least not until next year. And then, only if he reaches certain thresholds.

Cronenworth is the infielder the Padres received along with left fielder Tommy Pham in a December trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 26-year-old, who had a .949 OPS for Triple-A Durham last season, also pitches. He allowed four hits and two (unearned) runs in 7 1/3 innings in Triple-A last season.
