A tricky new shift isn’t the only thing the Padres have been working on with their infield. In fact, the real focus of spring training and all the months since it began and then ended has been nothing tricky at all.
It was in spring that infield coach Bobby Dickerson said: “The big picture for me is to make the real outs be outs. If we get extra, we get extra. I know it’s awesome to see things on ESPN, but I want to see the vanilla, the cleanliness of what it looks like to play at a high level.
