The San Diego Padres dipped into their prospect capital at the trade deadline to acquire significant pieces for the big league club. Starting with a system that evaluators didn’t rate highly to begin with (bottom five on every list), General Manager AJ Preller dealt 11 players from the minor league ranks, as well as three of the Padres’ 40-man roster pieces, to acquire eight players, with two of them starting off in the minor leagues.
Traded away
Low-A Lake Elsinore Storm lost LHP Boston Bateman, the top pitching prospect in the system, as well as IF/OF Victor Figueroa, SS Cobb Hightower, and reliever Tanner Smith.
