Padres lose Andres Muñoz, Reggie Lawson to Tommy John surgery

The Padres’ bullpen and minor league pitching depth took a hit Friday when right-handers Andres Muñoz and Reggie Lawson underwent Tommy John surgery.

The 21-year-old Muñoz, who pitched in 21 games for the Padres last season, made his first Cactus League appearance on March 5, striking out two and allowing one hit. He complained of mild soreness the next day. When it persisted, he underwent an MRI and received a second opinion that surgery was necessary for the tear in his ulnar collateral ligament.

Lawson, 22, had seemed to be working back from an elbow injury that sidelined him much of last season before finishing in Double-A.
