The Padres believe that they could need up to a half-dozen extra starting pitchers at the ready this season, due to the possibility that COVID-19 ravages their rotation.
Among the two pitchers they would like to be able to fill in are the organization’s sixth- and seventh-ranked prospects, left-hander Adrián Morejon and righty Michel Baez.
The pair started for opposite sides in Wednesday evening’s intrasquad game at Petco Park. And to be what the Padres need, they will need to be better going forward.
That was the key takeaway from a contest that lasted just 3½ innings.
