Padres hosting D-backs to start 60-game season

The COVID-19-shortened season will leave no place to hide: The Padres’ playoff hopes go straight through the NL West, beginning with the season opener July 24 at Petco Park against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

First pitch for that game — and all but two night home games — is 6:10 p.m. (There are two home games at 5:10 p.m.)

“Every year you want to be good in division,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said Monday, “and with this year in particular, if you don’t play well in-division, you’re eliminated. …

“There’s going to be some good teams in the division, and we’re going to have to play very, very well facing the NL West.
