Orders to cut payroll upended Greg Maddux’s hopes to land in San Diego in 1993. The Padres essentially chose David Wells over the pricier Maddux heading into the 2004 season. The third time was the charm when Maddux and agent Scott Boras finally struck a deal with General Manager Kevin Towers three years later.
“I always wanted to play there,” Maddux recalled this week. “I guess I had to be 40 and washed up to get there.”
