Padres history (June 2): Padres find Jake Peavy in the 15th round

The Padres picked six times inside the first 51 selections of the amateur draft on this date — June 2 — in 1999, with five of those selections arriving as compensation for losing Kevin Brown, Ken Caminiti and Steve Finley to free agency.

Only one of those players became a big leaguer, albeit not especially valuable as left-hander Mike Bynum returned minus-1.5 Wins Above Replacement over parts of three years in the majors.

General Manager Kevin Towers’ staff, of course, hoped for much bigger things out of that class, as most scouting departments do on the day of the draft.
