Padres history (July 29): Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman arrive in Cooperstown

Call this date — July 29 — historic on two significant fronts as Tony Gwynn, in 2007, and Trevor Hoffman, in 2018, were inducted to the Hall of Fame, joining Dave Winfield as the only Padres in Cooperstown.

Gwynn received 97.6 percent of the vote on his first ballot and entered alongside Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr.

The third time was the charm for Hoffman, who entered with 79.9 percent of the vote as part of a class that included Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero and Jim Thome.

“I hated facing you, bro,” Jones said of Hoffman during his speech.
