Padres history (Aug. 13): Khalil Greene’s impressive start

The Padres have been wowed by young shortstop play before Fernando Tatis Jr., although certainly not to this level. For instance, a 24-year-old Khalil Greene logged his first two-homer game on this date — Aug. 13 — in 2004 in a promising start to his career.

Greene also doubled twice in the game as the leadoff hitter, drove in four runs, scored four times and saved at least one run on defense in a 14-5 win in Cincinnati.

“This kid,” veteran left-hander David Wells said, “is just unbelievable.”

He added: “Right now, he’s just playing the game.
