Padres’ Chris Paddack fueled by family, experiences he turns into fire

CEDAR PARK, Texas —

Standing on the damp grass of a high school baseball infield on the last night of last month, a young man wearing a dark shirt, dark tie, dark coat, blue jeans, black cowboy hat and black boots spoke to a group of younger men.

“There’s no excuse why y’all can’t be standing here one day,” Chris Paddack told members of the Cedar Park High School baseball team.

Moments earlier, he implored them to do as he does, asking every day, “What did I do today to make myself better than yesterday?”

Anyone who has heard Paddack talk has almost certainly heard some variation of the two mantras.
