Padres by the numbers (17-24): Gwynn, Caminiti and what happened with No. 20

Tony Gwynn is one of two players to wear No. 19, and there is little argument about Mr. Padre’s place in team history. Those who wore No. 23 for the Padres, however, made that number memorable as well.

The greatest player and arguably the greatest number in franchise history are part of the third installment of Padres by the numbers. Plus, the almost wholly forgettable No. 20.

17: 25 players, including Sandy Alomar for 22 big-league plate appearances in 1989.

Best

Nate Colbert: Hit 163 home runs from 1969-74, still the franchise record.
