The Padres, most likely, were not going to win the NL West.
They were, however, going to thrive with Fernando Tatis Jr. again topping the order. Manny Machado was going to improve upon his first $30 million campaign in San Diego. Their starting pitching staff — with full, uninterrupted years from Chris Paddack, Dinelson Lamet and Garrett Richards — was sure to outpace last year’s efforts.
The Padres were most certainly going to be better this year.
Of course, we’ll never know for sure how the full 2020 schedule would have played out.
