MLB, players decide it’s (finally) time to play ball

Major League Baseball’s infuriatingly inert spring is over. There will be baseball this summer, pandemic permitting.

The Padres will be back at Petco Park en masse starting July 1 to prepare for a shortened season that is scheduled to begin a little more than three weeks later.

According to multiple news reports, the MLB Players Association on Tuesday agreed to the league’s proposed health and safety protocols and said its players would report by the start of the month. Two sources not authorized to speak publicly told the Union-Tribune an agreement is expected to become official as early as the end of the day, pending resolution of relatively minor details the sides are still clarifying in the health and safety protocols.
