Minors: Padres hire Mike McCoy to manage Lake Elsinore Storm affiliate

Edwin Rodriguez and Phillip Wellman are returning to manage the Padres’ two highest minor league affiliates — at Triple-A El Paso and Double-A Amarillo — while former USD infielder Mike McCoy will skipper high Single-A Lake Elsinore for the first time.

McCoy, a Grossmont High product, was a 34th-round round pick in 2002 of the Cardinals who joined the Padres’ player development system in 2016. He had served as short-season Tri-City’s manager the previous two seasons.

Joining McCoy on Lake Elsinore’s staff is hitting coach Patrick O’Sullivan and fielding coach Felipe Blanco. A pitching coach has yet to be named as Pete Zamora is jumping to El Paso in the same capacity.
